PRESIDENT

Melba Huber is president of Melba’s Inc, a world-class dance studio in McAllen, Texas that houses seven dance studios and a retail dancewear store. Melba’s opened in 1958. Melba is the founder of McAllen Dance Theatre that performs every February and in many local events.

Melba was the first person outside of New York to receive the prestigious Flo Bert Award at Lincoln Center. She has been honored by Oklahoma City University on two occasions and in October of 2011 presented a three-day workshop for the dance department.  OCU is considered to have the best dance training in the world. The Texas Senate recognized Melba in 1997 and presented her the Texas state flag. In l998, she was presented the Savion Glover Award at the St. Louis Tap Festival and in 2006 Savion honored Melba at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Other honors are from Tradition In Tap, Dallas Arts Council, Detroit Festival, Plaudit Award, and Who’s Who in the World, America, American Women and Education.

Melba is often introduced in New York as “the most published writer of tap in the world.”  For twenty years she wrote a tap column for two major dance magazines.  Her columns are available for reading at MelbasDance.com. She served as president of The Texas Association Teachers of Dancing and board member of Dance Masters of America. She introduced the first competitive gymnastics in south Texas.

Melba’s former students are everywhere in various forms of dance, gymnastics, exercise, ballroom and performing on Broadway. Melba conducts panels on tap history every year in New York and St. Louis. Melba is a conservator of American dance in the truest sense of the word.

 
 
Julie Doyle
Julie Doyle

DIRECTOR

Julie is the director of Melba’s Dance School and has been a part of the Melba’s family for 27 years. She also serves as the artistic director and choreographer of McAllen Dance Theatre and Melba's Triple Threat Theatre. She has been in charge of advanced programs for 10 years with specialties in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz and musical theatre. She was a dance major at Oklahoma City University and has a Bachelor of Arts in English with honors.

Her continuing education includes: memberships in the Texas Association Teachers of Dancing and the International Tap Association, and annual scholarships to the St Louis Tap Festival and the Big Apple Tap Festival in New York City. Her choreographic talents match Broadway levels in the advanced classes and she is equally skilled in the preschool levels that she loves. Julie has assisted and guest-taught tap classes at Oklahoma City University. She has also choreographed the musicals: Annie, Chicago, Pippin and Babes in Toyland, and in 2013 she developed an original Christmas production for Dias Festivos.

She is an active member of the Junior League of McAllen and served as co-chair for developing their new annual fundraiser - Mr. McAllen MVP Tailgate Party. The success of the event will help significantly impact the children of our community - a goal she aims to achieve both at Melba’s Dance and in her voluntarism efforts.


 DANCE STAFF 

 

Carmen MedinaCarmen Medina-Solis

 

Carmen Medina-Solis serves as the instructor and choreographer for McAllen Dance Theatre’s Senior and Junior Company ballet. Carmen has been dancing since the age of two. She has studied under many ballet masters such as Nikita Talkin, Eric Gibson, and Miriam Gonzalez and has performed principal roles in Classical Ballets such as The Nutcracker, Gisselle, Vivandiere, and Paquita. Carmen received an undergraduate degree in Biology with a minors in chemistry and dance and then followed with a bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant studies. In 2008, she completed her master’s degree in Physician Assistant studies and is currently on staff at Valley Medical Arts Clinic. In addition, she continues her dance education with master classes in New York City and Houston.

Cathie Eileen Gonzalez
Cathie Eileen Gonzalez

Cathie is an instructor for Melba’s Pre-school classes and developmental ballet classes. She has been a faculty member and student of Melba’s for 25 years. She also assists Sr. Company dance classes and teaches advanced technique jazz classes. Cathie was dance captain for the NBA D-League Viper’s dance team. In 2008, she auditioned for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and made it as a finalist in training camp. This past summer, she was the lead role (Velma Kelly) in the musical, “Chicago.” Cathie’s talents extend far beyond just dance. She is a true triple threat.

 

 

 

 Ricardo Flores

Ricardo Flores 

Ricardo is a ballet and jazz choreographer for Melba’s dance company members. In addition, he specializes in ballet folkloric and partner work for both ballet and social dance. His other specialties include contemporary, lyrical and musical theatre dance. Ricky recently completed his Masters in Science for Speech Language Pathology at Abilene Christian University. 

Susan Tristan

Susan Tristan 

Susan is a full-time student at UTRGV where she will be graduating with two Bachelor’s degrees, Dance and Mass Communication. She’s a member of the UTRGV Ballet Folkloric and the Ballet Ensemble. After graduating college, Susan plans to attend law school. Susan has been dancing for over 18 years and never thought she would end up being a dance teacher. She enjoys teaching and loves all her students.

 Naileah Garza

Naileah Garza

Leah serves as the Ballet Folklorico choreographer and assistant in many of the classes. She’s currently a junior at the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley. She not only cherishes teaching children but wishes to obtain a degree in Dance Education. She has been dancing since the age of three, grew up to join competition teams and has competed all over Texas, New Mexico, Mississippi and Nevada. She holds the title of Grand National Solo Champion in jazz, hip-hop, lyrical and technique.

 Hannah Young

Hannah Young

Hannah teaches preschool, developmental, and advanced classes. She was raised in Houston, Texas and began her dance training at the age of 10. She then went on to perform and compete with her high school and college dance teams. After graduating from Sam Houston State, she moved out to Los Angeles, CA where she taught and choreographed at a local studio and multiple schools. Outside of teaching she has had the privilege of working with Warner Brothers and iHeart Radio on "Suicide Squad." She also made it as a Laker Girl finalist. Hannah currently works as a Marketing Director for West Coast Elite Dance. Her teaching specialities include jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and acro.          

Alexa Rodriguez

 Alexa Rodriguez 

Alexa has danced for 13 years as a Melba’s girl. She currently assists preschool and advanced tap classes and teaches developmental tap. She has specialties in ballet, tap, jazz and hip-hop. During Alexa’s senior year, she received the Louise Longoria Scholarship. Alexa is currently a student at UTRGV pursuing a degree in nutrition.    

Diego Gonzalez 

Diego Gonzalez

Diego is a junior BFA Musical Theatre major at Abilene Christian University. He most recently wrote and directed an original play entitled Guadalupe and co-directed Peter and the Starcatcher with Thirteen O’Clock Theatre. His ACU stage credits are Man of La Mancha (Anselmo), Hands on a Hardbody (Jesús), 24 HR’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Joseph), Mary Poppins (Ensemble), and Ghost: The Musical (Subway Ghost). Diego has been dancing for four years and hopes to continue.      

Lauren Flores

Lauren Flores

 

Lauren attended Melba’s as a student, where she started her dance training. She went on to be a competitive dancer and a member on the McHi Stepper Drill Team, where she became a lieutenant officer her senior year. Throughout high school, she received various titles, such as UDA All-American, Showtime International All-Star, and was also awarded the title of NDA National Champion with her competitive team. Lauren currently assists with preschool and developmental jazz and ballet classes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Brianna Marquez

Brianna Marquez 

Brianna has been a student and staff member at Melba’s Dance for 11 years. She currently assists in preschool and developmental dance classes. Brianna is a freshman at UTRGV pursuing a degree in interior design.  

Daniela Rodriguez

Daniela Rodriguez 

Dani recently graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts emphasizing in Performance and Production. Dani works as Box Office Manager at STC Theatre, and is an Acting Instructor for the All Star Kids Club. She’s been a part of the Melba’s family for over four years, assisting in tap, jazz and her specialty, musical theatre.

Delilah Alviar
 
Delilah Alviar
  Delilah Alviar has been a key member of the Melba's family for 16 years. She is the manager of the retail store at Melba’s and also serves as the merchandiser. In addition to retail, Delilah is the accounts administrator at the school, and her creative eye helps play a valuable role in costume and set design in both the February and May shows.

 

 

Mary Jannell Leos

Mary Janell Leos

 

 

  Mary Jannell Leos has been at Melba's for nine years. She is a key member of the retail staff and is always available to help with any ongoing project. Her bilingual skills make her a great asset to Melba's. She is friendly, capable and extremely helpful to all the staff and students. Mary Jannell is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in business accounting from South Texas College.
