Pre-Funk at Melba’s School of Dancing in McAllen, Texas is a new class for preschool-aged children. The class is a combination of jazz and hip-hop dancing that incorporates age appropriate moves and the child’s own creativity.
I have found that the students really enjoy the class because of the high energy music and steps that are fun to learn and easy to remember. Having the experience of dancing jazz and hip-hop at such an early age opens a window of developmental opportunities for the children. All of the steps are the basis of different jazz and hip-hop moves that will be taught as they enter the more challenging jazz and hip-hop programs at Melba’s.
The class also emphasizes the importance of personal creativity and self-esteem. I find it crucial for a child to express their own styles and ideas. This also helps the child develop the confidence to perform and feel better about themselves.
The music is familiar to the children. I try to find the trendiest music with age appropriateness in mind. By finding music that the children will love, they connect better to the moves. The music is also something fun to let loose to and have a good time without the uniformity of ballet and tap.
The class not only helps the children have a good time and become better jazz and hip-hop dancers, but also helps them develop into well rounded dancers. The children will begin to see how different steps in all styles of dancing are connected, thus making it easier for them to understand.
The main goal of Pre-Funk at Melba’s School of Dancing is to create a fun and safe environment in which the children can grow and express themselves. The class is very exciting to young children because they get to groove to the music and learn new steps all while having an amazing time.
